Lose weight. Travel more. Curse less. We all have big goals around this time of year – but how many of them actually stick? Since those cookies and desserts are so delicious, we have a better idea for your New Year’s Resolutions – be energy efficient! It’s an easy plan if you’re looking to invest in new windows, new siding or new doors from Window World TX. But even if you aren’t looking for major home improvements, there are some really simple (and cheap) things you do to help cut down on that electric bill in 2015.
Let’s start with the baby steps.
- Turn off your lights when not in use – This may sound like a no-brainer, but how much energy do you waste every, single day by forgetting to turn off the kitchen or bathroom light when you walk out? Make sure your kids understand the importance of this, as well. Offer them an incentive if you see a certain decrease in your energy bill.
- Close the doors – Just like leaving lights on in unused rooms, leaving doors open is incredibly wasteful. When it’s really hot or really cold outside, leaving doors open is an invitation to the outside elements to come inside. That means your heater or air conditioner has to work even harder to keep you comfortable.
Conquered those energy-efficient resolutions? Here are a few, bigger ideas.
- Get smart – This doesn’t mean you should go back to college. Instead, focus on smart technology inside the home – namely the Nest thermostat or others like it. These products learn your habits and tendencies and begin programming themselves in response. That means you don’t have to worry about running to the thermostat before you walk out the door and right after you get back.
- Get new lights – If you still use old, incandescent light bulbs, it’s time to go LED. These energy-efficient, LED bulbs can save you as much as 75% on the cost to light the home. Plus, they last forever. Okay, maybe not forever, but pretty close. A typically LED lasts 50 times longer than those old-school light bulbs. So, yes, there’s a bit of an up-front cost involved in making the switch. But it ends up paying for itself after a while.
