After a huge rain or weather event, it’s not unusual to notice a dull layer of grime on your car, your windows and, well, everything else. While you can drive your car to a gas station for a quick trip through an automatic wash, your windows are sealed firmly into your home. Washing an entire home’s windows may seem like a daunting task, but it’s not! You can save money on professional window washers without a huge hassle.
First step – ditch the spray bottle and paper towels or rags. They produce lackluster results. Instead of smearing and smudging up your windows, you can produce a product that is clean enough to eat off of. Even better, all you need to make this happen is:
- A Squeegee/Scrubber Combo (like this one at the Home Depot)
- Dishwashing Liquid (perfect for lifting dirt and grime from your windows)
- A Microfiber Cloth
- A Bucket
All of this should run you less than $20. Professional cleanings can run you more than $200. You’re saving money already!
Step One:
Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to your bucket, and then fill it halfway with water. Don’t overdo it on the dishwashing liquid. You need the soap, not the suds.
Step Two:
Dip the scrubber or natural sponge into the bucket, and wash your windows in a winding backward S motion. Start from the top left and wind your way to the bottom, getting as near to the edges as possible.
Step Three:
Starting at the top left, repeat the same backward S motion – this time, using the squeegee. Or, if you prefer the gas station method, squeegeeing a straight line from the left pane to the right will work just fine. Whichever you choose, make sure to squeegee off all of the cleaning solution. We recommend wiping your squeegee blade clean with one of your microfiber cloths every so often for the best results. If you notice your squeegee sticking or squeaking, there isn’t enough dishwashing liquid in your water. Adding a drop or two to your solution should fix the problem.
Step Four:
The water has to go somewhere, and that means it could end up on your windowpanes. After squeegeeing, absorb any excess water with a dry, microfiber cloth. It will remove moisture without smudging your glass. When washing windows inside, lay a towel over your windowsills to catch an dripping water.
