With COVID-19 causing many of us to still stay at home and certain items to disappear from store shelves, now is a good time to learn how to make your own window cleaner, hand sanitizer and other cleaning products. These are just a few of several DIY projects you can take up to pass your time at home.
How to Make Your Own Window Cleaner
Making your own cleaner can save you a trip to the store, save you money and save on plastics.
What You’ll Need:
- A Spray Bottle
- Hot Water
- White Vinegar
- Dish Soap/Dish Detergent
- Fragrant Essential Oils (optional)
Vinegar is going to be your most important ingredient. Vinegar can clean through grease, dirt and remove any streaks.
Step 1: Mix your ingredients in a spray bottle. Combine 1/4 a cup of vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap. Dilute the mixture with two cups of hot water, and shake the bottle to mix. If need be, lemon juice can be a substitute for vinegar.
Step 2 (Optional): Vinegar has such a strong smell that it can be overwhelming for some people. Adding in some drops of essential oils can help deal with the aroma. Add in roughly 15 drops of your favorite oil, and that should do the trick.
Make Your Own Multi-Surface Cleaner
What You’ll Need:
- Distilled Water
- Essential Oils
- Vinegar
In a spray bottle, combine 1 cup of distilled water, 1 cup of vinegar and 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Shake it together.
Store the bottle in a cool and dark place, and make sure to shake it well before you use it.
Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer
While washing your hands for 20 seconds is recommended by the CDC over the use of hand sanitizer, you might be interested in making your own hand sanitizer at home. Here’s how to do it.
What You’ll Need:
- Rubbing Alcohol (99 percent alcohol)
- Aloe Vera gel
- Essential oil
In a mixing bowl, pour in 3/4 a cup of rubbing alcohol, 1/4 a cup of Aloe Vera gel and 10-15 drops of essential oil. Whisk all of the ingredients together until they turn into a consistency of a gel, and pour them into a bottle.
