The costliest hail storm in Texas
It looks like this month’s hail storm in San Antonio will go down as the costliest hail storm in Texas history.
According to the Insurance Council of Texas, the storm and its softball-sized hail caused approximately $1.36 billion in insured losses – $560 million to automobiles and $800 million to homes and businesses. The dollar amount of uninsured losses is expected to be large, as well.
Meanwhile, the number of damaged properties is also staggering. More than 110,000 cars and trucks were damaged in the storm April 12. Thousands of homes suffered damage, as well, including damaged roofs and shattered windows.
“The storm primarily struck the northwestern portion of Bexar County moving across northern areas of San Antonio with large hail that was shaped like jagged rocks,” said Robert Crosby, executive director of the Independent Insurance Agents of San Antonio.
Some hail reached 4.5 inches in diameter, according to The National Weather Service.
The previous record hail storm was in Fort Worth in 1995. That storm caused $1.1 billion in losses.
