Restore A Window That Won’t Stay Up
Are you dealing with a window that won’t stay up? Tired of holding your window open with whatever you find handy — an old book, a ruler or a wooden spoon?
Here at Window World TX, we’re often called on to help with this problem. One common issue causing a dropped window is the window shoes coming off the pivot bar. Luckily, you can easily correct this without stress.
Follow these step-by-step instructions to learn how to secure double-hung or single-hung windows and prevent them from dropping.
Steps To Fix A Dropped Window
Are your windows refusing to stay up, causing frustration in your home? Whether you have single or double-hung windows, the common issue of window shoes coming off the pivot bar can be easily resolved.
Follow this straightforward guide on how to fix a window that won’t stay up. These tips can help you restore functionality to your dropping windows with confidence and ease.
1. Identify The Shoe
Prop the window open and locate the window shoe built into the side of the frame. Using a flathead screwdriver, locate the metal part of the shoe with a “U” shape groove. The upright “U” indicates the locked position.
2. Unlock The Shoe
Apply force and turn the screwdriver clockwise until the “U” turns into a “C” shape, unlocking the shoe. Hold the shoe to prevent it from going all the way up, as it is spring-loaded.
3. Adjust The Shoe
Bring the shoe up three to four inches and twist the screwdriver back counterclockwise to return the groove to the “U” or locked position. Remove the flathead screwdriver.
4. Position The Sash
Lower the sash to the level of the shoe. The pegs on either side of the sash — the “feet” — should fit snuggly into the shoes on both sides of the frame
5. Tilt The Window Open
Use the tilt latch to open the window. Ensure the sash is parallel to the floor.
6. Force The Shoe
Press on the window near the shoe to force it into place. Tap with the side of your fist — do not use a tool. Do this only on the sash edges, not the glass.
7. Close The Sash
Close the sash securely. Your window feet should now be in their shoes and the window should fit securely in the frame.
8. Check Engagement
Open the window to ensure the shoe has engaged. If not, repeat steps four through seven. Proper engagement means the shoe is no longer visible and the window should function correctly.
Important Notes
Do not remove the sash unless necessary. Removing the sash involves additional steps and may lead to further complications. If the issue persists after following the provided steps and you suspect the window shoe is not the problem, it’s advisable to seek professional assistance from our team.
